Hillside Primary School
Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. At Hillside we pride ourselves in delivering high quality music education which engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians. This also increases their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.
We intend for our pupils to enjoy a dynamic and wide ranging music curriculum, thus increasing their cultural capital.
We are currently using `The Charanga Musical School Scheme` to ensure that all children across the school are being developed in the following musical skills.
- Listening and appraising
- Singing and musical instrument practise
- Composition
- Improvisation
- Performing and sharing
The scheme allows us to teach music through different genres of music, tailored to the age and stage for that year group. The scheme also allows us to support confident musicians to deliver challenge through differentiated tasks throughout each lesson.
As pupils progress through the music scheme of work they will develop a critical engagement with music. This allows them to perform, compose and to listen with discrimination to a wide and varied range of musical styles.
Singing is a valued musical performing attribute in school. We sing in whole-school assemblies, in our music classes and in extra-curricular activities. Our school choir meet on a weekly basis and to strengthen links with the community, perform throughout the year at a variety of local venues.
In addition to the Charanga music scheme, all children in Year 4 take part in a 45 minute Ukelele lesson with a specialised teacher from Kirklees Musica.
Below is the curriculum scheme of work for our music curriculum. It is broken into year groups. Hillside has adapted this to suit our mixed year group classes for years 1-6.
Year 1 curriculum is Cycle A for years 1&2
Year 2 curriculum is Cycle B for years 1&2
Year 3 curriculum is Cycle A for years 3&4
Year 4 curriculum is Cycle B for years 3&4
Year 5 curriculum is Cycle A for years 5&6
Year 6 curriculum is Cycle B for years 5&6
